The Himalayas are warming and its glaciers are melting. The phenomenon of Glacier Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) is increasing in scale and intensity across the mountain ranges, from the east to the west. These flash floods do not just devastate mountain communities in South Asia; the vast volume of water they send down through the mountain-born rivers cause floods downstream. For communities and their environments upstream and downstream of the mighty snow-fed rivers of the Himalayas, a rapidly warming world is bringing new perils that are impossible to cope with and adapt to.
To be in solidarity, we need to understand the complex problem of human-caused changes that are making ecology and communities in the Himalayas so vulnerable. And be informed about what we can do. Join us for a learning and discussion.
