The world needs a rapid transition away from fossil fuels to prevent dangerous climate change. But this is just half the story of climate justice. The other half is about creating a just future and centering stories of communities and Indigenous peoples.

South Asia is amongst the world’s most climate-vulnerable regions where hundreds of millions are exposed to climate impacts. South Asia needs a rapid global transition from fossil fuels. But with a large population, socio-economic vulnerability, and diversity, South Asia also needs just solutions for communities.

Our Programs

We share stories of how South Asian communities are responding to climate change, and we advocate for South Asian climate justice through building leadership in the South Asian diaspora in Australia.

Spotlight Story

Van Gujjars are forest dwelling pastoralists living in India’s sub-Himalayan region. For centuries, they have migrated with their native Gojri buffaloes – up to alpine meadows in summer and returning to the river flats before winter. Their migrations are known help tree growth through careful branch lopping and propagation through seed dispersals by the buffaloes. The UN recognises such migrations, known as transhumance, as climate resilient practices. But development and ‘fortress environmentalism’ are pushing Van Gujjar communities out of their forests. Read about a youth collective’s work to revive cultural stories and secure rights for Van Gujjar communities.
