The world needs a rapid transition away from fossil fuels to prevent dangerous climate change. But this is just half the story of climate justice. The other half is about creating a just future and centering stories of communities and Indigenous peoples.

South Asia is amongst the world’s most climate-vulnerable regions where hundreds of millions are exposed to climate impacts. South Asia needs a rapid global transition from fossil fuels. But with a large population, socio-economic vulnerability, and diversity, South Asia also needs just solutions for communities.

Spotlight Story

The forested foothills of the Himalayas are prone to cataclysmic fires. Development and deforestation have collided with climate change to make these places dryer and fire-prone. In the Indian state of Uttarakhand, communities in mountain villages have been stewarding their forests; yet they often find themselves fighting larger forces of destruction. Women play a significant role in fighting fires and planting and tending to trees. We recorded this song in the Garhwali language in Jardhar village. Scripted and sung by Mangni Devi who is the forest guard for Jardhar, the song highlights the plight of their forests.
