About Sapna

Sapna South Asian Climate Solidarity is a collective for climate justice in the South Asian diaspora in Australia. Sapna signifies a dream in many South Asian languages. For us, it stands for our vision of climate solutions that are equitable, and a future that is just and safe, in Australia, South Asia, and beyond.

We share stories of South Asian climate impacts, and advocate for South Asian climate justice, through building leadership in the South Asian diaspora in Australia.

South Asia is one of the most climate-vulnerable places in the world. We create a bridge between global climate action and the reality of how South Asians are living with climate change. Watch this story behind how Sapna South Asian Climate Solidarity started.

Our report ‘Why North South Intersectionality Matters for Climate Justice’ highlights the challenges that South Asian climate activists in Australia have experienced – that of telling climate stories about their own communities, and the lack of a culturally resonant space for themselves – within a dominantly White climate movement.

Sapna is a proud recipient of Environment Victoria’s Community Award, which recognises our work in the South Asian diaspora. Read more about our work here.

The growing Sapna community in Australia offers a space where South Asians across ages who are committed to climate justice can come together and strengthen our collective voice.

We stand in solidarity with First Nations Australians and Indigenous peoples around the world, against colonialism, fossil fuels, and impacts from climate change on their land, culture and well-being.

If you are a South Asian in Australia who is concerned about climate change, and want to join our community to act in solidarity with South Asia, write to us using the online contact form.
