Why are we talking about Green Remittances by South Asians in Australia?

Green remittance – money that migrants send back home to support their communities recover after climate disasters – is recognised as the only consistent way in which ‘climate finance’ is flowing to vulnerable countries and communities. But wealthy countries like Australia are obligated to provide climate finance to vulnerable regions like South Asia under the international climate agreement.

South Asians, now Australia’s largest migrant group, are enabling climate finance for vulnerable South Asia. Australia needs to start doing its fair climate share towards South Asia.
